The Mille Miglia 2011

The Mille Miglia 2011 will take place on Wednesday 11 of May to Sunday the 15 of May. The 1000 mile race will run clockwise from Brescia to Rome and back on the fabled Mille Miglia roads crossing seven regions: Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, the Marches, Umbria and Lazio on the way down, adding Tuscany on the way back.

The history of the Mille Miglia began as an open-road endurance race which took place in Italy twenty four times from 1927 to 1957. The race was banned after two fatal crashes. The first crash was a 4.2-litre Ferrari in 1957 that killed Spanish driver Alfonso de Portago, and the other crash of a Triumph TR3 in Brescia killing Joseph Göttgens. Now the race is run in accordance with the speed limits in Italy.

Just like in years gone by the Mille Miglia route goes through some of the most beautiful cities in Italy. The race will pass by Bologna, Gambettola, Sansepolcro, Spoleto, and Rieti on the way to the capital and Viterbo, Siena, Firenze, Reggio Emilia, Parma e Cremona on the way back.

The event is graced by some of the most desirable and expensive classic cars of today. Gran Turismo sports cars from leading manufactures include Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Bugatti and Porsche.

Participation is limited to makes and models of cars, replicas, even partial, are not permitted to enter. This year’s selection committee will give precedence to the cars that fall in the age range dating from 1935 and 1952.

The Mille Miglia organisation is spreading its reach to other parts of the world and is already enjoying success in the La Festa MM of Japan, the California Mille and the Mil Millas in Argentina.
