This giant of the motoring industry began life in 1884 as an electrical and mechanical business established by Henry Royce. It was to be another 20 years before Royce built his first motor car and met Charles Rolls, whose company sold high quality cars in London. An agreement was struck that Royce’s business would make a range of cars that would be sold exclusively by CS Rolls & Co and that they would bear the name Rolls-Royce. The rest, as they say, is history.
Just two years later the Rolls-Royce company was officially formed and the iconic, six-cylinder Silver Ghost was launched. Within a year the vehicle was described as ‘the best car in the world’. Today’s Ghost range looks quite different but is one of the most advanced cars ever built.
The original Silver Ghost was replaced in 1925 by another classic – the Phantom. It had a larger engine and used pushrod-operated overhead valves instead of side valves. The Phantom family continued to grow over the next 90 years with the design influenced by Royce’s rallying cry to “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it doesn’t exist, design it.”
